Alcoholism Treatment Options

Medications

The classical use of medications for alcoholism is to encourage abstinence. Antabuse (also known as disulfiram), for instance, prevents the elimination of chemicals which cause severe discomfort when alcohol is ingested, effectively preventing the alcoholic from drinking in significant amounts while they take the medicine. Heavy drinking while on antabuse can result in severe illness and death.

Naltrexone has also been used because it helps curb cravings for alcohol while the person is on it. Both of these, however, have been demonstrated to cause a rebound effect when the user stops taking them. These do allow a person to overcome psychological addictions to alcohol, but they do not treat the neurochemical addiction.

In more recent studies it has been demonstrated that the use of naltrexone while the alcoholic continues to drink can result in extinction of the neurochemical addiction. Referred to as the “Sinclair Method”, this technique is used with good results some US states and in Finland but has failed to penetrate much of the world because of the long-standing bias against any treatment that doesn’t involve detoxification and abstinence.

Rationing

Rationing or other attempts to control use are increasingly ineffective as pathological attachment to the drug develops. Use often continues despite serious adverse health, personal, legal, work-related, and financial consequences.

Detoxification

Detoxification programs run by medical institutions often involve stays for a number of weeks in specialized hospital wards, where drugs may be used to avoid withdrawal symptoms. In severe cases, detoxification may lead to death. To that point, even a simple “de-tox” can involve seizures, if not properly monitored.

Post Detox Therapy

After detoxification, various forms of group therapy or psychotherapy are recommended to deal with underlying psychological issues leading to alcohol dependence. It is also used to provide the recovering addict with relapse prevention skills.

Aversion therapies may be supported by drugs like Disulfiram, which causes a strong and prompt sensitivity reaction whenever alcohol is consumed. Naltrexone or Acamprosate may improve compliance with abstinence planning by treating the physical aspects of cravings to drink. The standard pharmocopoeia of antidepressants, anxiolytics, and other psychotropic drugs treat underlying mood disorders, neuroses, and psychoses associated with alcoholic symptoms.

Group Counseling

In the mid-1930s, the mutual-help group-counseling approach to treatment began and has become very popular. Alcoholics Anonymous is the best-known example of this movement. Various branches are available for family members of the alcoholic or commonly referred to as the co-dependents. Other groups include LifeRing Secular Recovery and SMART Recovery.

Prevention

Some programs attempt to help problem drinkers before they become dependents. These programs focus on harm-reduction and reducing alcohol intake as opposed to cold-turkey approaches. One such program is called Moderation Management.

Nutritional therapy

Another treatment program is based on nutritional therapy. Many alcohol dependents have insulin resistance syndrome, a metabolic disorder where the body’s difficulty in processing sugars causes an unsteady supply to the blood stream. While the disorder can be treated by a hypoglycemic diet, this can affect behavior and emotions, side-effects often seen among alcohol dependents in treatment. The metabolic aspects of such dependence are often overlooked, resulting in poor results.

Return to normal drinking

Although it has long been argued that alcoholic dependents cannot learn to drink in moderation, research by the U.S. National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) indicates a small percentage of individuals in the US whose dependence began more than one year earlier are now drinking in moderation. In contrast, a high percentage who undergo naltrexone use-reduction therapy are capable of normal drinking habits. Use of Naltrexone involves taking the medication an hour before any drinking occurs in order to maintain this.

Societal Impact

Today, alcohol abuse and alcohol dependence are major public health problems in North America, costing the region’s inhabitants, by some estimates, as much as US$170 billion annually. Alcohol abuse and alcohol dependence sometimes cause death, particularly through liver, pancreatic, or kidney disease, internal bleeding, brain deterioration, alcohol poisoning, and suicide. Heavy alcohol consumption by a pregnant mother can also lead to fetal alcohol syndrome, an incurable and damaging condition.

Additionally, alcohol abuse and alcohol dependence are major contributing factors for head injuries, motor vehicle accidents, violence and assaults, neurological, and other medical problems.

Alcohol addiction is a treatable disease. If you are an alcoholic or are a family member of an alcoholic, contact your physician for the most current treatments available.

How to Find the Best Restaurants in Barcelona

A Tour of Spain

Although Catalan cuisine is considered world-class, Spanish regional cooking is nothing to laugh at. And if you can’t make it to all the corners of the country, try some of the regional centers throughout Barcelona which let you sample the unique gastronomy from north to south. The Casa Gallega (Galician House) on La Rambla, 35, serves up some of the regions finest shellfish with their famous Albariño wine, a chilled white that is quickly become world-famous. Wines of a different hue take center stage at Casa de la Rioja, (c/Peu de la Creu, 8) which also features specialties such as marinated anchovies and broad beans with cuttlefish. Finally, for some world-class tapas without stepping foot in San Sebastian, head to the Centre Cultural Euskal Etxea (Placesta Montcada, 1) where you can find amazing octopus, slabs of award-winning idiazabal cheese and eggs with prawns.

Gourmet on a budget

Barcelona is nothing if not über-trendy, but the latest craze has less to do with gels and foams than with pocket-friendly meals. “Bistronomia” is the newest sensation in the city, and it refers to “bistro” meals, which are traditional dishes, and “gastronomia,” which are the avant-garde techniques used to make them. And with highly trained chefs creating inventive dishes at half the price of Michelin-starred restaurants, here’s hoping this trend is here to stay. Try Embat (c/Mallorca, 304) where the décor is nonexistent but the lunch menu, featuring fresh cheese ravioli with lemon and bacon, is divine. Or head to Hisop, (Passatge Marimón, 9) where the chefs seem right out of Ferran Adrià’s kitchen. Dishes such as grilled clam in thyme foam and blood orange emulsion with tuna will make you wonder how you’re paying less than €30. Finally, try Gresca, (c/Provença, 230), where the simplest ingredients are transformed by amazing techniques.

Just Desserts

If you’re the type to rush through a meal just to get to dessert, you’ll be in heaven at Espai Sucre (c/Princesa, 53). But be warned – these are not your typical cakes or ice creams. Here’s you’ll find three- and five-course tasting menus featuring everything from salty toffee cream with smoked whiskey; extra-virgin olive-oil cake with white peaches and green olives or a combination of cold raspberry sorbet, hibiscus soup, rose ice, tomato foam and red wine gel. “Salads” include cubes of spicy milk pudding on green apple, lettuce and toffee. Each dish comes with a wine recommendation, and there is a small menu with non-dessert items as well. Don’t be scared by the combinations; they might seem unusual at first, but your palate will thank you later. Be sure to call ahead for reservations, the place only seats 30 and is quite popular.

Being in the Catalan capital it seems only right that you should try the local cuisine. The best examples you’re likely to find can be found along Diagonal and the Ramblas, although these tend to be quite pricey.

For something a little more affordable you need to veer off the beaten track. Our Barcelona restaurants guide, has been designed with your needs in mind, you can search for any restaurant by name, type of cuisine or specialty, area of Barcelona or price you intend to spend.

Cape Winelands: a Feast for the Eyes and the Spirit

Cape Town’s Cape Winelands is a must-see place for tourists, not for the wines alone but for the majestic panorama of sweeping vineyards and soft rolling hills. The hues of this wonderful stage change with the time of day, flaunting the vibrancy of nature’s palette, crimson and lavender of dusk to the velvety soft hues of deep starry nights. In the daytime, the startling blue of the skies lends a lovely contrast to the colors of mother earth.

Top Wine Routes

In the western province of South Africa lies the Cape Winelands region. This is only an hour drive from Cape Town, so there is no excuse why you cannot spend a night in the wine-producing region.  Cape Town accommodation in this part of the province are varied and cater to the big shots in politics and Hollywood, yuppies, and backpackers who crave a respite from their extreme adventures.

The region produces the world’s best wines, 10 billion liters annually.  The grape wines flood the coffers of the economy and employ 300,000 workers.  The famous wine-producing places here are Stellenbosch, Paarl, and Franschhoek.  But other places like Constantia, Robertson, and Wellington should not be dismissed.  These are equally picturesque and produce quality wines—Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc.

Stellenbosch and Franschhoek are the two oldest vineyards with their history dating back to the seventeenth century when the Dutch and the French settled in the area and started growing grapes for wine.  The industry grew to become one of the top export earners for the country today.

From July to August, Stellenbosch celebrates the wine festival.  This is a big festival attracting hordes of tourists from all over the world. Among the other must-join activities are the mountain biking challenge, trail trekking, and visiting the vast vineyards. Just walking the tree-lined avenues can send you to nirvana.

Paarl is another Dutch settlement and the third oldest in Cape Winelands.  Other than its vineyards, Paarl offers mountain climbers and bikers the thrill of conquering Paarl Rock or trek the lovely trails in the woods just below the mountain.  Just make sure you are loaded with drinking water because the excursion can get you thirsty.

Constantia is another place you must not ignore.  Facing the False Bay, and just 20 minutes from the city center, the place is teeming with sights to see and explore.  Still standing and as beautiful as they were first built, stand the manors constructed Dutch style.  Picnic under the shade of ancient oak trees in the lawns or have sumptuous meals in the numerous restaurants or shop in the center.  There is always something for tourists of all inclinations.

Tourists and guest laze around and drop in the estates, enjoy the breathtaking scenery, sip wine, or have a grand tour of the places.  It takes a day or two to see all of one place so be ready to camp out in one of those wonderful boutique hotels and guesthouses that provide the same comfort and convenience of Cape Town hotels.

Do not strike out the Cape Winelands in your list when you get to Cape Town or you will miss paradise on earth.

Sake Bomb Or Saketini

Fire in the hole! That’s something that you yell when you toss a grenade into a bunker. It’s also something that I yell when drop a shot of hot sake into a glass of beer. The name of this shout worthy drink is the sake bomb.

The sake bomb is a fun party drink that can also be enjoyed in the comforts of a rowdy Japanese restaurant. You know the type of restaurant that I’m talking about. They’re Benihana style and you sit around the table with a build in grill and the chef cooks right in front of you. They usually like to tell bad jokes and entertain you with their cutting and chopping skills. Well if you get a young chef and some willing diners at the table with you, then it might be a good time to try a sake bomb.

Traditionally, you’re supposed to suspend the shot over the beer by laying two chopsticks across the top of the glass. Then you slam your two fists on the table to drop the shot into the beer. The beer of choice for the sake bombs that I drink would be Asahi Super Dry.

Although, when you’re a home mixologist, the presentation is less important. You can get by without the chopsticks or the sake cup and just dump some hot sake into your beer. Even though I own a fancy set of sake cups, I’ll usually drink sake from a coffee cup anyway. Hey why not? Coffee cups have nice handles on them so you don’t burn your hand.

If you have guests though, then by all means get them pounding on the table. It’s a lot of fun.

You could use either warm or cold sake but I prefer it warm. And don’t forget that the proper temperature to serve sake is a little shy of 100°F (37°C).

If a sake bomb is a little too lowbrow for you, then why not try a saketini? Bartenders are making Tini drinks out of everything now a days, so why not sake? If the sake is dry, then it will act like vermouth in your martini. You’ll want the best sake that you can find for this one. The better the sake, the better it will taste when it’s cold.

Saketini Recipe

Add the following to a cocktail shaker filled with ice:

2 ounces sake

1 ounce vodka

Shake well and strain into a martini glass.

Garnish with a cucumber slice

A nice way to prepare the cucumber garnish is to buy a fresh one from a farm or even your own vegetable garden. This way you won’t mind eating the skin. Supermarket cucumbers are covered in wax to make them look nice and last longer so you should definitely peel them. Take your farm fresh cucumber and run a fork length wise to dig small ridges into it. Then when it’s sliced and sitting on the rim of the martini glass it will look a little like a pinwheel. You’ll receive a A+ for presentation.

You can also make a saketini using gin and olives but I prefer the vodka saketini. Try them both and see which one you prefer.

The 5 Energy Drink Armies of the Apocalypse

May 29, 2009 by rum lounge

*In the voice of Dan LaFontaine (AKA Movie Announcer Guy)*

“The order of a world hangs on the brink of destruction. A world of sub-freezing temperatures well lit behind a glass door leading into the abyss beyond. One energy drink, a drink that has stood in defiance to the passage of time in a raging American economy. One energy drink holds its ground in the face of destruction. Destruction from the five most powerful energy drink armies known to man. Five armies so fierce, so large, that they shake the very shelves they stand on. The sole energy drink standard spawned with the beginning of time itself now fights in the eclipse of the Five Armies. The Five Armies of Amp, Monster, Sobe, Rip-It, and Rockstar have all found their way to the battlefield. Tradition will battle evolution in the ultimate showdown. One will survive. One will fall. One lone energy drink blogger will risk it all. Risk it all to tell all as he covers the results of the epic battle. What army will reign supreme and threaten the very nature of the current world? Read on… or take cover.”

Amp

This is Pepsi’s entry into the market. It started with the timeless and irresistibly tasty original Amp. This was one of the first energy drinks to break away from the standard energy drink flavor, and in hindsight was ahead of its time. Drink makers to this day have a hard time producing energy drinks with such a wonderful better-than-soda flavor. The Amp line quickly evolved with the addition of 5 other variations and a couple of recent tea additions. The line-up does not have one bad tasting drink, but a lack of energy plagues each and every one of them.

Variety: 3/5 Taste: 4/5 Energy: 2/5

Total: 9/15

Monster

This drink line-up is one mean powerhouse of taste, energy, tradition, and advertising power. The original Monster started out slow in the needy niche of the videogamer, but soon evolved into motor sports. Monster now undeniably commands the motor sport genre, and has won over the hearts of many average energy drink consumers with its unique taste and impressive energy offerings. It’s hard to not be intrigued by a can graphic of a monster inside the can clawing to get out. Monster’s popularity grew exponentially as soon as it started finding its way out of LAN gaming sessions to more and more gas station shelves, and soon added 4 other variations. Even more, Monster branched out extensively with their Java line-up to cater to the bean and tea lovers out there.

Variety: 4/5 Taste: 3/5 Energy: 4/5

Total: 11/15

SoBe

Pepsi just couldn’t get enough of the energy drink dollar with the Amp lineup! So, shortly after gobbling up SoBe from its original owners, they cranked out more energy drinks under the SoBe name. The first, No Fear, was an instant hit with its no-bs grapefruit taste. This drink picked a flavor direction, fully committed itself to it, and nailed it. Energy in the SoBe line has always been moderate, though, unfortunately. This seems to be a recurring theme with Pepsi. Obviously the SoBe line had No Fear, as its roster soon became incredibly deep. Added to the family were the Adrenaline Rush variants, sugar free versions, Gold, a promotional limited run Superman drink, a couple Essential Energy variants, and the recent Super Energy variants. In total, we’re talking 14 energy drinks in the history of SoBe. Currently, about 12 are available. The original No Fear cans are virtually nonexistent and the Superman drink is long gone.

Variety: 5/5 Taste: 3/5 Energy: 3/5

Total: 11/15

Rip-It

I have no idea where these drinks came from, it’s as if they flooded gas station coolers overnight. Unlike the other drink lines, this one did not start on a single successful drink and build up. This collection hit the market with an exceptional variety that hundreds of other drink manufacturers are still struggling to achieve. Rip-It’s offerings are also unique in the sense that each drink has its own highly unique (and enjoyable) taste, not just a special flavoring on top of a familiar taste foundation. This is actually quite an uncommon feature in the majority of energy drink collections out there. Unfortunately, energy offerings are mediocre at best. It is not uncommon to drink one of these drinks and feel nothing. To count the number of Rip-It flavors available you may just need to get a calculator out. This collection ties SoBe for the most extensive energy drink line-up known to man (Rockstar actually pretty much makes it a three-way tie, read on).

Variety: 5/5 Taste: 5/5 Energy: 2/5

Total: 12/15

Rockstar

To me, this drink’s gimmicky name and associated slogans are entirely lame. It seems as if the people behind the name of the drink did not trust the average consumer’s ability to understand analogies for the concept of energy, and landed with Rockstar – which conveniently comes packaged with a goody bag of painfully obvious cliché’s. “Gee guys. When I drink this drink I feel like I wanna… I dunno it’s awesome I think I wanna party! Ooh oohoooooh I know! I want to PARTY LIKE A ROCKSTAR! Hahaha did you hear that? I totally just made that connection on the fly! Ahh oh ooooh that’s so cool because rockstars like, you know – get crazy pumped up on life and totally bang all the hot chicks. This is awesome.” Ok, enough of my rant. I’ll get straight to the point – this drink is coffee’s worst enemy. The original Rockstar was received moderately well. It was a little late in the game, but it made a statement with its own take on flavor and energy; oh the energy! I’m telling you, the company behind Rockstar simply gets us. The drinks that followed the original Rockstar, all 10 of them (PLUS some coffee flavors), each offered more caffeine than any other drink collection has the guts to. Some of the drinks may not be the tastiest out there, but they certainly don’t gag you. But seriously, this drink line-up is the energy king.

Variety: 5/5 Taste: 3/5 Energy: 5/5

Total: 13/15

Victor: Rockstar!!!

This is the drink collection made for energy fiends. Down any one of their drinks, and you can almost always count on a pleasant experience with guaranteed wake-up power. To the rest of the four armies, take a book out of Rockstar’s page and give the customers what they want. Pack your 16oz cans with energy, and if you’re worried we won’t like it, offer some smaller cans. Rockstar, I salute you. I wish you the best of luck in knocking down the reigning king of energy drink sales. You know the one.

Individual Awards:

Most Improved: Rockstar Best Value: Rip-It (starting at $1.09 I have to add) Best Aesthetics: Monster Best Product Naming: Rip-It

Other random awards for product lines not mentioned above:

Most promising up-and-comer: NOS Worst tasting: Vitamin Energy Best chance to give you a heart attack: Spike

Disclaimer: It may be obvious for some, but don’t forget these are all one person’s opinion :) To qualify as an “army,” the company needed offer at least 7 different drinks (not including shots) that retail in the U.S. Product lines in the posted picture are not comprehensive. Four Classic Tiki Cocktail Recipes

May 29, 2009 by rum lounge

In the past few years there has been an amazing interest in Tiki bars and Tiki cocktails of yesteryear. Thoughts of Tiki culture may bring back memories of bartenders in colorful shirts from classic television programs or thatch-roof Tiki bars but whatever your memories of Tiki bars entail, these bars are making a comeback.

The good news is that it’s easy to make some of these popular Tiki cocktails at home, without any special equipment and with supplies found at your local store. What you will find with Tiki cocktails is that rum is normally the key ingredient and then it’s mixed with either a fruity or sour flavor and many are topped with fruit, a flower, or umbrella to add a little island flare.

Whether you are hosting a tiki party or just looking to mix up something a little different at happy hour, tiki cocktails offer a tropical twist to you or your guests. Beware the strength of these cocktails though – a couple of rum-loaded Zombies can leave the common man on the floor!

A number of popular Tiki cocktails are fun choices:

The Zombie

Named after its effect on the drinker, the Zombie was first served up in the 1930’s by the famous Donn Beach. It’s smooth, fruity taste can easily disguise the power of the alcohol contained in the Zombie. Ingredients in the Zombie can vary but one popular recipe includes: 1 ¼ oz of lemon juice, 1 oz of dark rum, ¾ oz orange juice, ½ oz of cherry brandy, ½ oz of rum, ½ oz of high-proof dark rum and 2 dashes of grenadine.

Mai Tai

Another popular Tiki drink by Donn Beach, the Mai Tai was another drink first served in the 1930’s. The word “maitai” translated from Tahitian to English means “good”, which is an appropriate name for the drink. One of the many Mai Tai recipe includes: 1 oz of Jamaican rum, 1 oz of Martinique rum, ½ oz of Orange Curacao, ½ oz of Orgeat syrup, ¼ oz of rock candy syrup, juice from 1 fresh lime. A sprig of fresh mint may be added as well.

Navy Grog

First made in the 1700’s by an admiral in the Royal Navy in Britain, this unique drink as stood the test of time. Many versions of the drink exist and one popular recipe includes: 1 oz of Grapefruit, 1 oz of Orange juice, ½ oz of Grand Marnier, 1 oz of Pineapple juice as well as ½ an oz of 3 types of rum; Light Rum, Gold Rum and Dark Rum.

151 Swizzle

Yet another drink popular in Tiki bars, first served up by Donn Beach after traveling to Montego Bay for inspiration. The 151 Swizzle can be made several different ways and one popular recipe for this interesting drink includes: ½ oz of sugar syrup, ½ oz fresh Lime juice, 1/8 tsp of Pernod, 1.5 oz of 151 Demerara rum, a dash of Angostura bitters and a dash of Ground nutmeg.

The above are just a few of these iconic drinks first served by the famous Don the Beachcomber in his famous Tiki bars. Many different variations have been invented and tweaked, but nothing beats the original drinks.

Napa Wine Tasting Tours – Make the Most Out of Your Vacation

Napa wine tasting tours are one of the most prestigious yet simple delights you can experience while visiting California. Napa valley is known for its luscious and fresh stretch of grapevine farms, which produce among the most exquisite wines in the market. To help market these products, wine tasting tours are being offered in Napa Valley wherein guests and tourists are given the chance to know more about the farms and get some first-hand experience with tasting freshly fermented wines.

There are actually two different ways of experiencing these authentic Napa wine tasting tours. Although you can always go with a group for the wine tasting treat, you can also plan on your own wine tasting tour right in Napa valley with the right procedures to guide you.

Planning Your Own Napa Valley Wine Tasting Tour

1. Research about the possible lodging accommodations in Napa Valley.

You can either go online or visit your local travel agent to give you useful advice on this. There are some lodging sites in Napa Valley which are wine farms themselves, so from there you can already experience an authentic wine tasting treat. By visiting your travel agent, not only do you get the chance to know of must-see places in Napa Valley but you might also avail of discounted travel packages specially if you travel off-season.

2. Car Rental

Think about the fact that you are taking in alcohol throughout your wine tasting tour. This being said, it is always better to rent a car throughout your stay there or at least a car driver who can accompany you during the trip. If you wanted to save up on this, you and your companion/s can designate a car driver as you cruise along the Napa Valley farms. One thing is for sure though, there are not too many public rides in Napa Valley so do not forget making transportation arrangements.

3. Go Off Season

If you wanted to have the best experience in Napa Wine tasting tours, you better do it off season. If you go there otherwise, you may find yourself crowding it with other tourists who come in groups. Off season often happens from September until November.

Joining Napa Wine Tasting Tours

Of course if you wanted to save yourself the effort of planning your own trip, you can always avail of travel packages. Discounted fees may be available in group trips which would already include everything you need: tickets, lodging, and transportation while in Napa Valley. The best thing about going on group tours is that you can get exposed to a wide variety of activities. More than just visiting places such as Kenwood and Glen Ellen, you can also get access to wine bazaars and food & wine pairing events.

However, be mindful of schedules if you come to Napa wine tasting tours through a travel package. You cannot be late and you do not really hold your own time. You may also spend just a limited amount of time in one place so make the most out of it.

Book reviews: My Best Friends Girl, by Dorothy Koomson – Part 1

May 29, 2009 by rum lounge

I had read many positive reviews about books by the author Dorothy Koomson and so when I saw the book “My Best Friend’s Daughter” at my friend’s Scout jumble sale I thought I would buy it. It then sat on my bookshelf for several months as I tried to work my way through other books. However a recent holiday prompted me to start this book and I am glad I did.

The copy of my book has a sticker saying that this was a Richard & Judy’s summer read. The front of the book also says “What would you do for the friend who broke your heart?”

The book tells the story of Kamryn Matika a young single woman who as the story begins is enjoying her birthday. However that enjoyment is short lived as she opens a card from Adele Brannon someone who she used to be best friends with. However the two have not spoken to each other since Kamryn discovered that Adele had slept with her fianc and then became pregnant with his child. However now Adele needs Kamryn’s help, she is dying and she wants Kamryn to adopt her 5 year old daughter Tegan. The last thing Kamryn needs is a 5 year old daughter to look after and especially one who will remind her of her fianc and best friends betrayal and of the life she could have had if she had married him. What will Kamryn do? Will she be able to forgive Adele? Will she be able to look after a child? To find out you’ll need to buy the book. (p.s all the above information you find out on the back of the book so I’m not giving away anything about what happens).

It is a book which deals with many different themes including death, looking at it from both an adults and a child’s perspectives and grief and the different way people deal with it. It also looks at abuse and as such could be upsetting to people. The author deals with these topics sensitively and with a great deal of understanding.

I really liked the characters in this book, Kamryn especially as she is quite a complicated character. She tries to come across as being strong and independent but she is really quite in-secure. During the book she develops a relationship with someone and its really interesting to watch and made all the more amusing with Tegan’s intervention. Tegan’s character is also great, the author really makes you feel for Tegan and to imagine what it would be like for a 5 year old to lose their mother and how much they would really understand. You just want to reach out and give her a big hug!

I really enjoyed this book it was a book that pulled me in and made me want to read on to find out what happened. It was a real emotional read, I made the mistake of reading this book whilst on a train journey and trying to hide the tears that were welling up in my eyes at times! It also can be funny at times, it’s a real emotional rollercoaster. It is a really great story with characters that appear real and that you can relate with. It’s a topic that makes you think, what would you do in that situation.

I only paid 50p for my copy of this book but its worth a lot more than that. I have now got “Marshmallows for Breakfast” which is another of her books and I look forward to reading that too and just hope it is as good.

The Complete Guide To Good Food For A Diet

May 29, 2009 by rum lounge

So many people want to know what is good food for a diet. When I say: “the complete guide to good food for a diet” most will probably think that I am taking a fat change here! It will surprise you though, to find that “good food for a diet” is not that difficult. Most common everyday foods are excellent weight loss food.

1. What is the secret then?

If you want to lose weight, you have to follow a well balanced diet combined with moderate exercise. This will ensure long term healthy weight loss.

2. But, I promised you a guide, so here it is:

Pig our on veggies, yes you are reading this right, pig out on veggies. Most vegetables are very low in calories and packed with nutrition. There are some though, that are better for fat loss than others.

* Green vegetables:

Most green vegetables are excellent for weight loss. Take note though, that peas are very high in carbs and must rather be considered a carbohydrate than a green vegetable. You also have to take care that you do not add calories with your cooking methods; for instance, spinach can be considered a free vegetable, but as soon as you make creamed spinach it becomes very high in calories and are completely unsuitable.

* Yellow vegetables:

Here you can go overboard. Carrots are a very good choice and even pumpkin, if you do not add anything can taste very good and be very satisfying.

* Salads:

Especially in summer, when salads really taste good, eat as much salad as possible. Here, once again, beware of adding calories. Most salad dressings simply crawl with calories. Make your own with fresh ingredients so that you can control what goes into it.

* Meat:

When it comes to meat, good food for a diet is mainly chicken and fish. Low fat beef and pork can be eaten in smaller quantities. As far as the chicken goes, try and stick to the breast as it contains the smallest amount of fat, it is almost fat free. Once again, do not add calories with your cooking methods, grill or steam are the best.

* Legumes:

Legumes are excellent food for a diet. They are low fat, contains lots of fiber to make you feel satisfied and combined with small amounts of carbs they supply your body with complete proteins to use as building blocks.

* Carbohydrates:

Do not cut out carbs completely. Your body needs them to burn for energy. You have to cut down though and eat no more than five small portions a day. Keep to whole grains and low fat options. Remember that you can include rice, potatoes and peas here.

* Dairy products:

Here you have to be careful. Only eat low fat or fat free dairy products and beware of hard cheeses as they normally are very high in fat and crawls with calories! A good choice as food for a diet is fat free, unflavored, unsweetened yoghurt. Use it in your cooking and as salad dressings.

* Fat:

Normally fat can not be considered as food for a diet. Your body does need some fat, though, to be able to use the fat soluble vitamins so you need to eat about three teaspoons of fat or oil a day.

So, there you have your complete guide to food for a diet! I hope it will help you in your weight loss efforts.

Share your Enthusiasm for a Glass of Good Wine in a Wine Tasting Party

We all love to savor the taste of a fine wine. While you may like drinking a certain type of wine such as a Merlot there are times when you will want to increase your knowledge of other wines. To make this learning process fun you can invite some friends who share your enthusiasm for a glass of good wine to a wine tasting party.

These wine tasting parties can be as fun or as semi-formal as you like. The best way to have a successful party is to invite friends who are comfortable in each others’ presence and ones who like to drink wine. This does not mean that your wine tasting party is going to turn into a drinking binge. To keep the level of interest going and to ensure that your guests are able to keep sober you can plan on serving some delicious food at the wine tasting party.

As each person has their own preference for wines you can decide on selecting 4 to 6 red wines and 4 to 6 white wines. You can also ask your guests to maybe bring a bottle or two of their favorite wines. To make sure that you have enough of a selection you can find out the wine type that your friends will be bringing. This way you can make sure that you are not going to buy the same wine.

Once you have thought about the amount of wine that you are going to be serving and the wines that your friends will bring you’ll need to choose some good wine choices of your own. These wines don’t have to be very expensive but they should be ones that are of a good quality. You will also need to have some bread and unflavored saltine crackers bought as well. These snacks will help your guests to wash their mouths free of the wine at your wine tasting party.

Before your wine tasting party starts you will need to make sure that you have more than enough places for your guests to sit and be comfortable if they want to. You should also provide lots of glasses for everyone to try the different wines that catch their eye.

Once your guests have arrived you should encourage the wine tasting party atmosphere by letting your guests choose the wines that they want. When you are sure that everyone is having a great time and learning about all of these wines at the wine tasting party, you can begin to introduce the pairing of food and wine. Let everyone enjoy drinking their wine choices with great tasting food. These are just a few ideas for you to try for a successful wine tasting party.
