Fun Educational Classroom Games

Children do not go to school to learn games, but a game may help them to some valuable acquirement. The occasional introduction of such exercises as are suggested here will relieve the monotony of the schoolroom, will rest the pupils, brighten their wits, concentrate their attention, and give them a fresh impetus for more serious work.
The games can be used sometimes in opening exercises, or for ” busy work ” between recitations, or occasionally in place of a recess. In district schools where children living far from the school bring their lunches, these plays will make the noon-hour pass quickly and pleasantly.
Geography and History Helps.
Capping Names: This game is played by each scholar in order naming some place or person, each to begin with the final letter of the one previously given. Starting with London, the next might be Newport, the next Troy, and so on.
This game may give choice of geographical names generally, or be limited to names of cities, historical characters, etc. When used as a geography exercise, it is well to have the places located; and in the history class dates and brief descriptions may be given; as, Alexander, king of Greece, fourth century B.C. ; Eaphael, one of the “old masters”, lived in Italy; Longfellow, American poet, nineteenth century; Washington, “the father of his country”.
Piece-Work: Two pupils choose sides. No. 1 names a city, county, or river previously studied by the class, about which No.1 of the opposite side must state a fact. No.2 another, and so on down the line. The head scholar who has already recited then proposes a city for the other side, which is taken in the same manner. If any one hesitates he returns to his seat. If the sentences do not hold out the length of the line, and any one below the last who recites thinks of another acceptable sentence, the intervening scholars take their seats.
If those left in line can think of nothing further, and one on the opposite side recites a fact which the entire class is supposed to know, the remainder of the line pass to their seats; but if this does not occur, a new city is given. If thought best, some scholar may sum up the facts after they have been separately given.
Alphabetical Game: The group is divided by choosing sides. The leader begins by naming a place beginning with the letter A, and then slowly counts up to ten. If some one on the opposite side during this time can give some geographical name beginning with the same letter he does so, and in turn counts ten, giving the other side a chance to name a place. This goes on back and forth until there is a failure to give a place during the counting.
The side which last gave a name is awarded a credit, and the game is begun anew with the letter B. All the letters of the alphabet are thus taken, and the side which has the largest number of credits wins.
Historical Pictures: As a review exercise in a History class pupils may be required to bring in a written description of some person or event wliich they may select, leaving the subject to be found out by the other pupils when the exercises are read. A skillful teacher may also use these pictures with good effect in bringing historical scenes vividly before her pupils.
The following are illustrations:
1. On a plain stand two armies, only waiting for the signal to commence fighting, when an old man comes between them and proposes that instead of a battle it shall be a single combat. Three men are chosen out of each army. Two of the three are killed, but the third, in feigning flight, cleverly kills his three opponents.
2. A venerable man, dressed in a costume of ancient times, holds in his hand a bowl of some liquid which he is about to drink. As he raises the bowl to his lips a smile lights up his face; but the persons gathered about him are shedding tears.
3. A man, moved by some deep feeling, is leaning upon a cross-bow, while a boy runs to him holding an apple cut in pieces as if an arrow had passed through it.
4. A glade in the forest. Natives of the land are gathered about a group of three persons; one of these kneels, his hands bound; another is in the act of throwing herself upon him ; the third has swung up above the two a heavy club, which is about to fall.
5. A king of ancient times, unable to untie a very complicated knot, cut it through with a blow of his sword. This he did that he might fulfil a certain prophecy.
6. The scene is a park, before a large and magnificent palace. Standing about it are many courtiers, and amongst them is their king. They are all looking anxiously at a noble and spirited horse, who is prancing about in the midst of the assembly, and who will not allow any one to mount him.
All at once a youth springs forward, and, taking the bridle, caresses the horse and endeavors to quiet him; then, taking off a kind of cloak which he is wearing, he springs lightly on his back, and in a little time the animal flies across the plains at the top of his speed, to the pleasure and admiration of the spectators. Then, having satisfied himself with running, he returns to the assembly, who load the youth with praise, and congratulate him on his good success.
1. The fight between the Horatii and the Curiatii.
2. Socrates drinking the fatal hemlock.
3. William Tell, after shooting the apple from his son’s head.
4. Pocahontas saving John Smith.
5. Alexander cutting the Gordian knot.
6. Alexander mounting Bucephalus.
Review: As a review exercise, let one of the pupils stand in front of the class, and the others in turn ask her questions. In case of failure, the one who has asked the last question is to exchange places with the pupil on the floor.
Judges Nursing Almighty Hangover From the Great American Beer Festival

This fall many beer loving Americans will have hopped on a plane to attend the biggest beer festival in the world – the Oktoberfest in Munich. Some may have chosen to stay closer to home and opted for the world’s second largest Oktoberfest at Kitchener-Waterloo in Canada. But many others, who savor American beers, will have traveled to Denver for the Great American Beer Festival.
Unlike the Oktoberfests that last up to 16 days, the Great American Beer Festival is held over a mere three days, starting on Thursday, finishing on Saturday and featuring only home-brewed, domestic beers. Held for the 26th time during mid-October 2007 the beer festival drew over 40,000 beer lovers to Denver in the heart of the Rockies.
At this year’s festival more than 100 professional judges were required to work their way through 2,793 different beers submitted for judging by 473 different breweries; quite a staggering task! After the judging process they awarded 222 medals across 75 categories. Tough work, getting through so many beers in so little time but they managed it and all in good time! It’s very difficult to win one of the coveted Great American Brewing festival medals with only 8% of the total number of entrants eventually leaving the festival with one, meaning that it is a great selling point for the winning beers, being able to display a representation of a winning medal on their label.
There are many different categories judged at the festival with the fastest growing being the Fruit and Vegetable Beers which saw the number of entries leap from 46 in 2006 to a staggering 94 this year. Wood-barrel-aged beer saw a 24% increase in the number of entrants and even Gluten-free beer was judged this year recording a respectable eight entries, although festival organisers expect that number to increase substantially at next year’s event.
Each visitor to the festival gets to sample as many of the 2,793 beers as they can manage, drinking one ounce samples from the festival’s breweries. Arranged throughout the exhibition hall by regions, the breweries at the festival offer visitors a walking beer tour of the USA.
This year’s festival was the biggest yet, and next year organisers are planning on making it even bigger. So, be prepared if you are thinking of visiting the Rockies in mid-October 2008 as finding a hotel in Denver that isn’t full of beer lovers will be a real challenge!
A Wine Tour is a Great Way to Learn All About Wine!

So you’re new to wine tasting! Why not consider going on a wine tour?
Years ago, wine tours were geared for the elite in society. That is no longer the case. Whether you are a beginner or an expert, wine tasting is suited for everyone. It is a great way to learn about wine, or try something new.
The first thing to decide on is what area you want to going tasting in. There are so many wineries throughout the world, with many to choose from. Consider Temecula Valley, which is located in Riverside County in Southern California. This region, which is south of Los Angeles by 45 minutes, and north of San Diego is quickly becoming a must do in the area. It is close by and offers over 30 wineries!
If you live out of the area, consider staying in a local hotel, and plan on wine tasting one day and exploring the area the following day.
When planning your wine tour make sure to have a designated driver. No matter what, consider the consequences of driver while under the influence. Even though you may not intend on drinking too much, your judgment becomes impaired. The mere fact that you are endangering everyone on the road should be a sobering consideration. (The cost of a DUI is devastating both financially and remains on your DMV for years to come)
Consider hiring a Wine Tour company to go on a wine tour with. They know the area, and can enhance your day.
If you do go with a Wine Tour company, do your research. Consider this, do you want to go to pre-determined wineries and stay on their schedule? Or would you prefer a wine tour company that allows you to ‘chart your own course’ while reviewing their information on all of the wineries? Your wine tour will enhance your knowledge and allow you to explore a world that you will soon love! There are two types of tours. One is guided, going with a large group and visiting designated wineries. The second is one allowing you more freedom and choice. One consideration is you are learning and want to be able to ask numerous questions and learn as much as possible. A smaller, personalized wine tour may be the right choice for you. The vintners often are available to answer questions and guide you through the learning experience. They have expert staff, who given a smaller party, can take the time to teach you all about wine tasting. With a larger party, you often get lost in the crowd and have to wait until someone else asks the question. Then it is time to leave to visit the next winery.
Vineyards generally allow 4-6 oz of wine as samplers. You will taste several wines, so keep that in mind when sampling. Make sure that you take it slow and enjoy your day. This is not about getting to as many wineries as you can. It is about enjoying the wine and making it a memorable experience.
Should you visit large wineries or smaller ones? You can learn a wealth of information from both. The size of the winery is a personal preference. The larger winery’s often have a wider selection. The larger wineries often have award winning wines, although don’t strictly go by the awards. The smaller wineries may have a phenomenal wine that you may overlook if you miss visiting them.
Consider making a reservation for lunch or dinner out in wine country. What better way to have the proper food paring, than by the experts themselves? Temecula Wine Country offers an array of restaurants from the casual dining, to the elegant fare. You can do your research on line, prior to visiting wine country and find out more about the area and what it has to offer.
Keep a record or log of your experience. Write down the wine and characteristics that you have observed. Before you take another wine tour, refer back to your previous records. This will help you to build on your knowledge. Make notations of wines that you particularly enjoy and note why.
If you discover a winery that you absolutely love, ask to join their wine club. You can get information from the individual winery whether or not their wine club is open, along with the details on how to join.
Finally, consider taking some wine home with you. Wines are available from the vintner and you should plan of purchasing some from the winery. The smaller wine tour companies often allow you to purchase wine and put it in the vehicle with you. That way, you can enjoy it at a later date.
Good Food Planning Means Good Weight Control

In contemporary living, weight control is difficult: nowadays, the busy and hectic lifestyle demands so much of your time and energy that you may frequently skip your gym sessions, or easily grab something in lieu of a proper nutritional meal on your way to work or on the road.
Dieting is indeed a difficult endeavor. Without dieting, weight control is even more difficult, if not impossible, to achieve. Without proper planning, your food and fitness choices will be more limited, making your dieting difficult to follow through.
Therefore, to be successful in dieting or weight control, you should not leave healthy eating to chance. This is where food planning plays a pivotal role in weight loss. Planning means taking time to prepare your meals in advance. Even for snacks, you should get them ready at your office desk or in your car, so that you will not be munching cookies or chips. Good food planning takes away the daily stress, which often contributes to binge eating.
Supermarkets are designed in such a way to entice you to shop longer and spend more. Some grocery stores’ layout requires you to navigate through aisles of tempting food items. Good food planning means you shop with a list, so you would know exactly what to buy – or what not to buy. You need not browse through different shelves to get what you want. Never shop when you are hungry. Resist the temptation of items displayed on the check-out lanes, which are either sugary or loaded with fat. Always plan ahead in your grocery shopping to reduce the number of trips to the supermarket to save you money as well as to help you lose weight.
Prepare your meals at home rather than eating the packaged food items, which are often loaded with calories and chemicals. If you cook your meals yourself, you can make them healthy and control how much you are going to eat. This is an important component in any weight-loss program.
Break the habit of eating only certain types of food at a certain time of day. A bowl of oatmeal can be your lunch too! If you don’t have time to sit down for breakfast, you can have a turkey sandwich with whole grain bread and some fresh vegetables both for breakfast and lunch. That saves you time and hassle.
Planning meals ahead of time (do your planning on weekends) helps weight control. Decide what you want to eat for the whole week, and then go to the supermarket to get all the ingredients you need for the week. Prepare your meals in advance. Store and freeze your leftovers in individual containers.
Having food cravings is not uncommon. Prepare yourself for your cravings for sugary and salty food by planning ahead and having healthier alternatives available, such as low-fat soy crisps (120 calories), an apple (80 calories), and a bag of skittles (250 calories). Always include a healthy treat into your weight-loss plan, so you would not feel deprivation or hunger. Plan to have ready-to-eat food items, such as a bag of baby carrots, strawberries, or grapes. Plan to have foods which provide some protein, fiber, and good fats within the 200 and 250 calorie range.
Food planning means you keep a list of healthy foods, snacks, and meals you enjoy. Plan to have several options for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks. Good food planning provides you with more freedom and variety to make dieting a joy not a pain.
Just How Good is Blue Moon Beer?

Beer is drunk just about everywhere in the world while there are many different brands which taste fantastic you may have your own personal favorites. Of these many types and brands you may like the taste of the Blue Moon Beer. This particular beer is an example of a Belgian style white beer. In most instances you should be able to find this brand of beer at your local alcoholic beverages stores, bars, restaurants and sometimes in your local supermarkets.
The Blue Moon Beer is a variety of white beer which is made by Molson Coors Brewing Company. This beer was presented to the public during 1995. The creator of the Blue Moon Beer is an individual named Keith Villa. Originally Blue Moon Beer was called Bellyslide Belgian White. It was created at the Coors Field’s Sandlot Brewery.
This brewery is the Molson Coors onsite brewery. Even though the Blue Moon Beer is an example of Belgian Beers it is made in the US. This labeling of the beer as Belgian in origin has caused the company some problems with Belgium. As the Blue Moon Beer was also called Belgian White it was felt that consumers would think that the beer was produced in the US.
Even though the Molson Coors Company has had to amend the labeling of the name it has kept to the original advertising to get the public to buy the beer. The interesting thing about this Belgian styled beer is the various ingredients which are used to produce the beer. While most beers use ingredients like oats, hops, and malted barley the Blue Moon Beer is made slightly differently.
To make the Blue Moon Beer distinctive from that of other beers you will find that it contains malted oats, barley and white wheat. Additionally you will find that coriander and orange peels have been added to some hops. These final ingredients provide the beer with an interesting orange flavor.
You will find that most places serve this beer with orange slices to enhance the flavor of the beer. This is in contrast to the lemon slices which are served with other types of beer. For those of you who are interested in buying this beer you will find that it is sold in beer kegs and bottles. Another interesting fact about Blue Moon Beer is that it has variations which are known to be a winter and fall time beer.
To let you see just how good this beer is you will discover that various awards have been given to the beer. These medals which were given during the years of 1995 to 1997 all indicate to us that the Blue Moon Beer is an excellent beer to drink at any time of the year.
Wine Tasting Party Secrets

Most wine lovers, at some point, have taken the opportunity to participate in a wine tasting. In many cases, the tastings were sponsored by a commercial winery. Sometimes local merchants who sell wine will have a tasting. Even cruise lines have wine tastings on many cruises. However, did you know that it’s quite possible to turn your home bar, or wine bar, into a very professional wine tasting event!
Of course your wine tasting doesn’t necessarily have to be “professional”, but i’m sure you’d like it to be authentic and fun. This article will provide some keys to a successful wine tasting.
Home wine tasings should be rather small gatherings. Anywhere from 4-8 friends is perfect. Tell your friends to each bring a bottle of wine in a specific price range. Now, there are two schools of thought on the types of wine to bring. Some wine tastings feature all of the same type of wine, a Merlot, for example. Other tastings feature a variety of different types of wines. The single type of wine tasting is not as challenging to the taste buds, and therefore a better choice for an amateur event.
Certainly, you want your wine tasting to go as smoothly as possible. Consequently, preparation is the key. Definitely have a quality wine opener on hand. It’s well worth the investment to purchase a heavy duty commercial opener. They are fast and effortless, and seldom damage the cork. They also are much more durable then standard corkscrews. A good, modestly priced opener has two prongs that slide down the cork and help ease the cork out of the bottle has you twist. Also, make sure you have a wine bucket handy with ice, or an electric wine chiller, in case one of your guest brings a wine that needs chilling. A wine cart is a terrific way to present all the bottles, and even serve the guests as it moves around the room.
Make sure that you number the bottles and disguise the labels. Have appropriate stemware on hand for the type of wine you’re serving.
Instruct your guests to evaluate the wines using a 3 step process. First, have them look at the clarity and color. Wine should have an appealing look. After all, presentation is everything! Next, they should smell the wine. Try to get your guest’s first impressions, as they are always the most accurate. Wine aromas change the longer they meet with the air. Have your guests inhale deeply and describe what they smell. Finally, have them taste the wine. The glasses should be no more than 1/8 full. Have them roll the wine evenly around their mouths, taking in a little air. Air can enhance the flavors.
It’s interesting to note that when evaluating the wines, your guests will seldom show a consensus on which wine is “best” .Remember, this process demonstrates that we all have different tastes. There are no “right” or “wrong” judgements. The rating system is simple. The wines are scored on a 1-10 basis, with 10 being the highest. Add up the scores for each wine and divide it by the number of tasters. The highest average wins.
Wine tastings at home are not only fun, but they give you the opportunity to show off your wine furniture and wine carts. Also, they keep you experimenting, and this process will always introduce you to new “favorites
The Surge In Functional Health Beverages
June 28, 2009 by rum lounge
Improve your memory? Lift your mood? Relieve tension? A growing market of functional health beverages enhanced with herbs and other ingredients promise to improve your health. But do these drinks really offer health benefits? Judging by the reaction to these products the answer is a resounding, yes.
Americans want to be healthier and also discover the fountain of youth and longevity. The food industry is rushing to fulfill this new desire. The new buzzword is functional health beverages and foods. Functional beverages (also known as neutraceuticals) are beverages fortified with dietary supplements and herbal medicines. And they are becoming a multi billion dollar industry.
Experts predict Americans will buy more bottled water than coffee or beer. Artificial flavors are losing ground to drinks with all natural claims. Antioxidant tea products are now the rage. And at least one brand of coffee is adding herbs and minerals to its beans. Energy drinks are the fastest growing supermarket category with sports drinks right behind.
Japan was a pioneer in functional beverages and foods consuming nearly twice as many functional beverages as any other nationality. The Japanese have always made the direct connection between what you eat and drink and what you are, and they’ve long viewed their diets as being a primary source of health and medication.
Energy drinks have been established in Japan for decades and are also known as tonic drinks. Initially targeted at young consumers (and routinely used by this demographic as alcohol drink mixes), these drinks are now being aimed at people of all ages who need a healthy energy boost.
People now understand that almost everything we take in has some kind of effect. This is a new kind of knowledge. Consumers are more empowered because of this knowledge, and companies are responding to this new found personal edification.
Other market sectors are continuing to expand. Enriched juices and juice-based drinks fortified with vitamins and minerals are gaining in popularity, as are herbal-infused beverages. All this goes well for the functional beverages industry.
Functional health beverages are going more mainstream, because consumers have become much more holistic-minded, so companies are now meeting them in the middle. There is a consciousness out there now that very small amounts of something can have a very significant effect.
The functional beverages industry has attracted the attention of traditional beverage manufacturers focused on expanding their product ranges in the face of falling sales of old stand-bys such as carbonates. Pepsi’s purchase of Gatorade and South Beach Beverages Sobe, Cadbury Schweppes purchase of the Snapple and Mistic brands and Coca-Cola’s acquisition of Mad River Traders are a few examples.
Products affiliated with major sporting brands, such as Reebok and Umbro sports and performance drinks, also are infiltrating the market. More sophisticated products, such as fast-rehydration drinks, are becoming popular, especially in Japan, where stamina enhancing sports drinks with added ingredients to aid performance are becoming more popular.
Wellness and nutraceutical drink products are increasingly being targeted at specific segments of the population, for example, age, gender, lifestyle and particular health conditions. Examples include Sunny Delight for children and drinks for women. Targeting specific segments of the population has been the motivation for many new products such as, women-specific products, issue-oriented products, for example, prostate and breast cancer prevention.
At present, the sports drink market is the most mature and therefore presents little opportunity for growth, which has become apparent already in the US and Japanese markets. Across all functional health beverage product lines, energy drinks are the fastest-growing sector, a trend that shows no sign of slowing in the immediate future.
The nutraceutical-wellness drink sector is the least developed but possibly the most exciting category, with drinks containing ingredients such as probiotics, prebiotics, soy proteins and phytosterols. Over-the-top premium pricing policies have also restricted sales in some circumstances, although a recent US survey showed 40 per cent of consumers were willing to pay a premium for products containing added nutritional benefits.
The same study ranked these benefits and found energy enhancement, illness prevention, heart health, anticancer effects, relaxation, mood enhancement and sexual enhancement were the most desirable. With interest in these kinds of products higher than ever, the future looks bright for this category.
The 1990s fueled a health and lifestyle revolution that resulted in consumer demand for foods and beverages that provide both nourishment and good taste, at the right price. The beverage industry, with functional drinks, has successfully met those desires by selling a broad range of products juices, energy drinks, smoothies, soy-based beverages, enhanced isotonics, enhanced water, teas that fulfills a nutritional need.
Claims for many of these drinks have not been proven and the amount of added ingredients is neither standardized nor identified on the label. And their safety optimal doses, interactions and long-term consequences isn’t known. Some skeptics believe the best approach for healthy living and feeling energetic is to eat healthfully, get regular physical activity and give yourself time to relax.
US consumers spent more than $25 billion dollars on wellness drinks in 2005, making up 12% of all soft drinks spending across the US and Europe. The market represents a major opportunity for drink marketers, as consumers become aware of the link between diet and lifestyle.
What is important about the Wellness Industry? How about the definition: wellness is anything that makes you feel healthier, stronger, see better, hear better, feel better, or fight symptoms of ageing. The Sickness Industry has a definition that is more in line with healthcare: anything concerned with being sick and treating symptoms of sickness.
The Sickness Industry has little to do with preventing illness, being stronger or healthier which increases the popularity of the functional health beverages and food products. People are tired of popping pills for everything that ails them and are taking a more holistic or as some say looking at alternative health treatments rather than the traditional medical care that most of us have grown accustomed to.
The Wellness industry is going through a boom. Before the end of this decade, it is estimated that the Wellness industry may surpass the dot.com revolution. This is an exciting time.
Whether its drinks or spreads, yogurts or desserts, functional foods and beverages are among the fastest-growing categories in the food industry. If this looks like the 80s all over again, this newly discovered health trend has got to be the strongest yet. Consumers approach to health is different this time; it is more aggressive, sophisticated, and here to stay.
Doctors Note – the Quick Fix Slip – an Underachievers Best Friend

Here?s a scenario that most people are likely to identify with. It?s Monday morning. You?ve spent the entire weekend, partying like there?s no tomorrow. In fact, that hangover you?ve been nursing is making it impossible to even lift yourself out of bed. You just can?t see yourself going into class. But as you probably realise, attendance makes up a certain percentage of your overall grade. So what do you do? Should you go to school and sleep through the entire lecture, feeling worse as each hour goes by? Or should you just call in sick and stay in bed?
At this point, most college-goers would realise that in order to beg off from school, they?re going to need a valid doctor?s note. And these cost, not just money but also time. For example, you?re going to have to make your way over to a clinic and probably wait a while before you get to see the doctor. But how can you expect him to give you a doctor?s note when there?s clearly nothing wrong with you? Nothing but that nasty throbbing caused by too many vodka shots. And even if you do manage to convince the doctor that you are indeed ill, chances are that the hospital doctor?s excuse is going to cost you. And wouldn?t you rather spend that cash partying some more over the coming weekend than on a medical check-up?
If this situation seems familiar to you, you just may need to settle for a printable fake doctor?s sick note. With a little digging and by being very patient, you may just find a suitable excuse for getting out of school or even missing work on the Internet. These days, there is a considerable range of authentic written doctor?s excuses that you may wish to use to explain your absence from school or work. As with any printable form, a medical release follows a stipulated format and has a standard design template.
To get your hands on a fake doctor?s note which really does look like the real thing, you?ll have to search online for one that you can use. In fact, any one sample of a fake doctor?s note can be used for different purposes at different stages. If you need to slip out of class early to volunteer at a children?s hospital (a noble cause indeed), you?ll find a suitable doctor?s note that you can download to explain your absence. Once you download it, simply store a copy on your hard drive and then hit the print key. Just be sure to remember the excuse that is stated on your doctor?s note as drawing a blank when your principal asks if you?ve recovered from that nasty stomach flu is the worst way you can ever slip-up.

With the amazing weather and the beautiful scenery, wine touring in California is a brilliant way to experience and taste some of the fine vintage US wines. With more than 200 days of sunshine every year, the climate in California is ideal for the wine business. There are 6 predominant varieties of wine in California.
There is the Sauvignon Blanc, a white wine that has a herbal or melon taste and tastes best when accompanying seafood. The Chardonnay has a buttery taste and usually complements seafood and chicken. Among the red wines, there is Pinot Noir, which is fruity and Merlot, which can be either floral or fruity in taste. Then, there is Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel that are spicy, herbal or fruity. Along with these varieties, there are many other types of wines available to tempt your taste buds.
