How to find cheap but good wines – Part 1

As much as we’d all love to have cellars stocked with $400 bottles of chardonnay, most of us cannot quite afford it. There is no reason however that we cannot enjoy good wine at a bargain price, all it takes is a little know-how, and a little luck.
You have probably heard before now that cleanskin wines are the way to go. I can say with certainty that in most cases this is true, but be careful where you’re buying from. Don’t go to a shop that wasn’t there last week, chances are it won’t be there next week and you’ve paid $20 for a $7 bottle of wine.
Make sure you know what you are getting and don’t be afraid to complain if you have been sold a sub-standard product.
Aside from this, I have two further reccomendations. If you are lucky enough to live near and Aldi’s supermarket, go there, they have some top quality wines at bargain prices, you have to get lucky here, but it’s always worth a shot.
Lastly, in the way of Australian wines, the cheapest is often the best. This goes doubly for reds but it rings true for most white wines. This has to do with the less intensive processing, which is good for Aussie grapes (I am assured) because they are far more robust.
A $7 bottle of wine can often be just as good as if not better than a $30 or $40, the idea is to find out what you like, go for taste tests, and don’t be afraid to ask questions.
I hope this has been of some help!
